Same problem. I added following lines in custom.php :
  $Style2 = & $GLOBALS['Style'];
  $Style2['date'] = "background-color:yellow;font-style:italic;";
A page with %date%27/10/06 looks fine in "preview" mode but in "normal" mode it is not interpreted. [philippe.jartoux at cegetel.net]

Not sure what the problem is at the moment... Will take a look when time allows (REALLY busy at the moment...)
I have put an inline style definition in this page to make the formatting work locally
"A page with 27/10/06 looks fine in "preview" mode but in "normal" mode it is not interpreted."

Had a quick look on my test environment (windows, apache2, php5) and it works as expected. I have cut'n'pasted your code above and, after the save, have a highlighted date in italic...

[philippe jartoux] Sorry, I had that problem with version 0.3.x, there is no more problem since I upgraded to version 0.5
